Man City pair keen on Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves Hargreaves managed just four appearances in three seasons

Manchester City pair Joe Hart and Joleon Lescott say former England international Owen Hargreaves would be a welcome addition to Roberto Mancini's expensively-assembled squad.

Former Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves, 30, is a free agent and is said to be in talks with City.

"It is only going to be good for City if he arrives," said Lescott. Hart added: "It would be a good signing."

City refused to comment on the speculation of Hargreaves' arrival.

Voted England's best player at the World Cup in Germany in 2006 he joined United from Bayern Munich for £18m the following year.

He played in the 2008 Champions League final victory over Chelsea in Moscow but then began to suffer with knee problems, restricting him to four appearances in three seasons.

Hargreaves lasted just 10 minutes of his comeback against Wolves last September and United opted not to renew his contract as a result.

However, in a shock move Mancini is considering giving the former Bayern Munich player a chance with what would, considering his history, most likely be a pay-as-you-play deal.

City keeper Hart, at an England press conference ahead of Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier with Bulgaria, was asked about the possibility of Hargreaves joining.

"Owen Hargreaves has done great for Bayern Munich," said Hart.

Lescott backs England manager Capello

"He has struggled a bit since he came to Manchester United but that is not down to ability, just his fitness.

"If he can get himself fit and does sign for Manchester City, it can only be a positive."

If he were to sign for City it would add some defensive solidity to a side which has been boosted by the arrivals of striker Sergio Aguero and forward Samir Nasri this summer.

Lescott added: "Owen is an experienced player, he has played in the Champions League, is an international. It is only going to be good for the City squad if he signs.

"People ask if it represents a gamble but the club know what they are doing, Owen knows what he is doing. He is still a good player.

"If we can get him fit, I'm sure it won't be very long before he is back to his best. He will be a player with a point to prove after his injuries."
