Newcastle allow Barton QPR talks

Newcastle have given midfielder Joey Barton permission to hold transfer talks with Queens Park Rangers, the Press Association understands.

The 28-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Manchester City in 2007, is in the final year of his contract.

He was made available for a free transfer in the close season after criticising the club's transfer policy.

However, he started both of Newcastle's opening Premier League matches, picking up yellow cards in both matches.

On the opening weekend of the Premier League season he was involved in an ugly clash with Arsenal's Gervinho, and later admitted he had over-reacted in the melee that led to the striker's sending off during the 0-0 stalemate.

He was then booked for dissent as Newcastle secured their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win at rivals Sunderland.
