Barton holds talks over QPR move

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton is in talks with Queens Park Rangers over a potential move to Loftus Road.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Magpies from Manchester City in 2007, is in the final year of his contract at St James' Park.

He was made available for a free transfer in the close season after criticising the club's transfer policy.

However, he started both of Newcastle's opening Premier League matches, picking up yellow cards in both matches.

On the opening weekend of the Premier League season, he was involved in an ugly clash with Arsenal's Gervinho, later admitting he had overreacted in the melee that led to Gervinho's sending off during the 0-0 stalemate.

Barton, who has also played for Manchester City and has made one appearance for England, was then booked for dissent as Newcastle recorded a 1-0 win at rivals Sunderland.

Newcastle reiterated that Barton was always available for transfer and would not require permission to speak to clubs but the BBC understands QPR contacted the Magpies out of courtesy.

QPR and Newcastle are due to meet in a Premier League game at Loftus Road on 12 September.
