1957: The game in Udine is being played at 200mph, I tell you, and Gervinho has just forced a smart near-post stop stom Samir Handanovic after cutting in from the right-hand side... he might regret not crossing to Theo Walcott upon reflection, but decent effort.

1956: At St James's Park, Liverpool are on top and have already had a decent chance with Martin Skrtel getting on the end of a corner at the back post but failing to find the target. At Upton Park, West Ham's brilliantly named keeper Ruud Boffin has been busy, denying Jake Taylor with his legs when he ran clean through. Taylor should have scored.

1954: Udinese have the ball in the back of the net! But it's disallowed - correctly - for offside as Antonio Di Natale was beyond the Arsenal defence when he volleyed in Pablo Armero's knock-down. Phew.

1953: Udinese's Giampiero Pinzi is down. He's been Frimpong'ed.

1951: ...but Aaron Ramsey's set-piece does not beat the first man.

1951: Arsenal, full of purpose early doors, have a corner...

1950: BOLTON v MACCLESFIELD (2000)
Bolton:
Bogdan, Riley, Wheater, Knight, Alonso, Eagles, Mark Davies, Pratley, Petrov, Sanli, Blake. Subs: Lainton, Cahill, Kevin Davies, Klasnic, Connolly, O'Halloran, Blakeman.

Referee: Eddie Ilderton (Tyne & Wear)

1949: First goal of the night in the Carling Cup - Barry Robson handing Middlesbrough the lead at Peterborough with a slide finish from Marvin Emnes's through-ball.

1948: Second chance for Arsenal - Theo Walcott stinging the palms of Udinese keeper Samir Handanovic from the edge of the area.

1947: Flying start in the Udinese-Arsenal match, the hosts bursting out of the blocks with a break that forces a good Carl Jenkinson clearance - and then the Gunners bouncing up the other end as Gervinho is released down the left, the Ivorian shimmying past Udinese right-back Joel Ekstrand, only for his low cross to be gathered by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic with Robin van Persie waiting to pounce.

1945: Under way in Udine - and in the other 1945 Carling Cup starts...

1944: At St James's Park, meanwhile, Exeter and Liverpool also emerge from the dressing rooms. You should see the look on the Exeter players' faces. Bless 'em.

1943: So, with Udine hotter than Tom Jones's jockstrap, the Arsenal and Udinese players emerge from the Stadio Fruili tunnel. One goal in it, a monster match, let's get it on...

1937: Elsewhere in the Carling Cup tonight, Serbian midfielder Radosav Petrovic makes his first start for Blackburn as Rovers boss Steve Kean makes six changes for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday. Owls boss Gary Megson, whose side are 12th in League One, makes eight changes himself. Reserve-team-tastic.

Two other players are making their 'debuts' for the Hammers. George McCartney and 19-year-old centre-back Callum McNaughton, an academy graduate. As Andy Gray would say, "take a bow, son(s)".

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE UPDATE: Lyon were the first team tonight to book their spot in the group stages of the competition after securing a 1-1 draw (4-1 on aggregate) against Rubin Kazan. In the other fixtures tonight, Benfica versus FC Twente is locked at 2-2, Viktoria Plzen of Czech Republic hold a surprising 3-1 lead over Copenhagen and it's 1-1 between Sturm Graz and BATE Borisov.

1921: Everton boss David Moyes makes five changes to the team that lost to QPR on Saturday for the visit of Sheffield United, with Jan Mucha, Tony Hibbert, Mikel Arteta, Marouane Fellaini and Victor Anichebe all come in to the starting XI. And in one of our 2000 BST kick-offs, Tuncay makes his Bolton debut as Owen Coyle makes eight changes for his side to face League Two Macclesfield.

Martin in Cardiff via text: "So, what are the chances of the 'Posh' overturning 'Boro, after scoring 7 at the weekend?"

ScouseMick via text: "I am wondering if I am the only Liverpool fan who actually wants the Carling Cup taken seriously. I want a trophy!"

1909: Ah, it's what makes Wednesday Football nights magic - crunch European ties promising more drama than an extended Twin Peaks box-set. And as if that wasn't enough, we've only got four other Champions League qualifiers and seven Carling Cup beauties involving the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Bolton, Blackburn and West Ham as well. I know! It's like all your Christmases have come at once.

1905: Add to Arsenal's woes a failure to reach the Champions League group stages for the first time since 1997/98 and, well, Gunners fans might as well throw the towel in right now huh? They may as well give it all up and start following rugby or something. Right?

1900: So, just in case you've been hiding under a rock these past few weeks, there's been a lot of talk of 'crisis' surrounding Arsenal lately. Well if they lose tonight - I'll say you aint seen nothing yet.
